"I can think of only two reasons for asking children to do book reports. First, I want them to like reading, and second, I want them to think about the author's message as they read. Children who like to read do it. Children who don't like to read don't do it. Children who read become more fluent readers. Children who write about what they read become more thoughtful readers. It seems almost too simple to be true."
- Jan Joss Each term, students will choose and read a fiction book at their reading level which connects with the science or social studies units being studied. As well as elevating their reading skills, these projects will help build writing and presentation skills. |
Term 4: Students Choice* Book/Movie Report * subject to Mr. Mac's approval
4/30 For their final book report of the year, students will analyze the book or movie of their choice*. Using the same format we have utilized all year, students will report on the characters, setting, plot, conflicts, resolutions and themes of their chosen piece. Story maps and written reports are due Monday, May 18th. Oral presentations will take place during that week.
Given the many special events and trips in May, students are strongly advised to manage their time wisely and to get their reports started early. Links to the grading schemes and the story map template are available at the bottom of this page. |

Term 3: Newbery Book Report The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

For this book report project, students must read, analyze and present to the class one of this year’s Newbery contenders before the official awards announcement on Feb 2nd. I have borrowed a selection of contenders from local libraries from which students may make their initial book choices. Of course, students are encouraged to read as many contenders as possible, and hopefully on Feb 2nd at least one student will be able to say, “Hey, I’ve read that book!”
ALL PRESENTATIONS MUST BE COMPLETE BY FEBRUARY 2ND WHEN THE NEWBERY AWARDS ARE ANNOUNCED.
