Welcome to the 6th grade classroom of Mr. McIlquham at Ashley Academy! Of course you can call me Mr. Mac, but I hope that, by the year-end, you’ll be comfortable saying (and even spelling) my somewhat complicated (and less than phonetic) last name. While my name is Scottish, I was born and raised in Canada and then travelled the world with my family - we lived in England and Australia before settling in the US and becoming American citizens. |
Mrs. Mac and I have been married for 33 years and have two children, both graduates of Ashley Academy; this fall our son Cameron will be studying Biology at ETSU, and daughter Tori will enter 11th grade at Science Hill.
I am excited to be teaching 6th grade this year, and I am especially pleased that we will be covering all the core academic subjects in our classroom. My first degree (many years ago) was in business and computer science, and in my global wanderings I have developed a keen interest in geography, history, science and literature – and a corresponding desire to encourage the same curiosity and passion for learning in my students. The opportunity to integrate lessons and quickly draw connections between what we are learning in science, social studies, language arts and math is just one of the many things that makes teaching at Ashley Academy so special for me.
I’ve created a classroom website which has details on all of the above and much more – please check it out so that you can get as excited as I am for school to start! To encourage your curiosity and get those mental juices flowing, I've posted the first of many fun challenges under the "Classroom" tab. You can email me with your thoughts on this question (or any other) at [email protected]. You may submit as many entries as you like, and all correct answers will be rewarded when we kick off our classroom economy!
Have a great "last few days of summer", and don't forget about the School Picnic on Monday evening - I'll see you there!
