April is Poetry Month, and the American Library of Poetry is holding a National Student Poetry Contest!
Since we recently finished studying the epic poetry of Ancient Greece and Rome, I challenged my students to come up with their own "6th Grade Epics" in the style of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. My requirement was that they use free verse and elevated language to describe the journey and adventures of a classic mythic hero, including an invocation to a muse and the gods along the way. The contest requirement was that they do so in 20 lines or less! |
For a "Homeric" version of what we've been up to in class this year, check out the creative submissions below!
